Distance learning is instructional delivery that does not constrain the student to be physically present in the same location as the instructor. Historically, Distance Education meant correspondence study. Today, audio, video, and computer technologies are more common delivery modes. There is a difference in distance learning and distance education. Distance learning is the result of distance education. It is the responsibility of institutions and instructors to control educational delivery while the student is responsible for learning.

There are three major defining elements of distance education. They are as follows:
  • The separation of teacher and learner during at least a majority of each instructional process.
  • The use of educational media to unite teacher and learner and carry course content.
  • The provision of two-way communication between teacher, tutor, or educational agency and learner.

What we propose to do at the Tennessee Technology Center at Whiteville is offer our local high school students the opportunity to share in the virtual workforce. Each student will be given the chance to meet with local employers and ask questions about his/her organization. It will also be used to sit in on informative classes that can be used to better one’s understanding of certain subject matter.
